L&T Energy GreenTech Ltd (LTEG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), has signed a Joint Development Agreement with Japan’s ITOCHU Corporation to establish a 300 kilotons per annum (KTPA) green ammonia facility at Kandla, Gujarat.

The project, for which L&T secured land in 2024, will produce green ammonia primarily for export. Under the agreement, ITOCHU will offtake the ammonia for bunkering operations in Singapore, supporting the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner fuels.

This initiative marks a significant step in advancing sustainable energy infrastructure and aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, which targets 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen production capacity by 2030. L&T aims to play a leading role in the green energy value chain, spanning manufacturing, engineering, procurement, and construction services.

Industry experts note that the Kandla project is part of L&T’s broader plan to invest up to ₹48,000 crore in multiple green ammonia units, potentially scaling up to 1.8 million tonnes per annum for export to Southeast Asia and Europe.

By combining L&T’s infrastructure expertise with ITOCHU’s global trade network, the partnership is expected to bolster India’s position as a key player in the global green fuel market.
