The Union government has appointed M Angamuthu, a senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, as the new Chairman of Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA).

Angamuthu, who is presently serving as the Chairman of Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA), will take over from Rajiv Jalota, who demitted office in October 2024 upon reaching the age of superannuation. Since Jalota’s retirement, Mumbai Port Authority – one of the 12 major ports under the Union government – has been functioning without a full-time Chairman.

During this interim period, Sushil Kumar Singh, Chairman of Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), was holding additional charge of Mumbai Port Authority.

The appointment of Angamuthu was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Saturday.

Strategic Significance of Mumbai Port Authority

Mumbai Port, located on the western seaboard, is one of India’s oldest and busiest ports, playing a vital role in handling bulk cargo, liquid cargo, and passenger movement. It also holds strategic importance for India’s maritime trade, urban infrastructure integration, and cruise tourism.

The leadership change comes at a crucial time when India’s major ports are gearing up for ambitious capacity expansion, digital transformation, and green port initiatives under the government’s Maritime India Vision 2030.
