The Vizhinjam International Seaport has achieved a major milestone by handling 1.30 million TEUs in its first full financial year of operations (FY2025–26), emerging as the fastest Indian port to cross the 1-million TEU mark within a year of launch.

Operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd, the deepwater container transhipment hub began commercial operations in December 2024 and has since witnessed rapid scale-up in traffic.

Between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026, the port handled 607 vessels, with total transhipment volumes reaching 1.296 million TEUs. In March alone, Vizhinjam processed 61 vessels and 118,678 TEUs, underlining strong monthly momentum.

A significant driver behind this performance has been cargo support from Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A., the world’s largest container shipping line, which has underwritten the entire volume handled at the port so far.

    Expansion Plans Underway

Building on its strong debut, APSEZ has commenced work on Phase 2 expansion of Vizhinjam, with an estimated investment of ₹16,059 crore. The expansion will add 4.1 million TEUs of capacity, more than doubling the current Phase 1 capacity of 1 million TEUs.

Phase 2 will leverage existing infrastructure such as the breakwater, roads, and terminal systems, reducing incremental marine construction to just 920 metres of breakwater, compared to 3 km built in Phase 1.

The upcoming phase will significantly upgrade the port’s capabilities, featuring:

    21 automated ship-to-shore cranes
    45 automated rail-mounted gantry cranes
    A dedicated rail handling yard
    Advanced electrical and automation systems

Already regarded as India’s most advanced automated transhipment terminal, Vizhinjam is set to adopt next-generation automation technologies in Phase 2 to further enhance efficiency.

    Timeline

The construction of Phase 2 is expected to be completed in three years, followed by 10 months of testing and operational readiness, positioning Vizhinjam as a major global transhipment hub in the region.
