Container trade along the west coast of India is facing disruptions as congestion builds up at major ports amid the ongoing crisis in West Asia, affecting vessel schedules and cargo movement.
Industry sources said several shipping lines have adjusted sailing schedules and rerouted vessels due to security concerns and operational uncertainties in the region. As a result, container traffic has started piling up at key gateways such as Jawaharlal Nehru Port and Mundra Port, leading to longer turnaround times and delays in cargo clearance.
Exporters and logistics operators report that increased waiting times for berthing and container handling are affecting shipment schedules, particularly for time-sensitive goods. Freight rates and insurance costs have also shown signs of firming up amid the uncertainty.
Trade experts warn that if congestion continues to intensify, it could further slow container flows and increase logistics costs for exporters and importers relying on west coast ports for international trade.
