Shipping Corporation of India has launched a tender process to acquire methanol-ready containerships as part of its strategy to modernise the fleet and align with the global shipping industry’s transition toward cleaner fuels and lower emissions.
The proposed vessels are expected to be designed for future methanol fuel adoption, allowing operational flexibility as alternative marine fuels gain wider acceptance in international shipping. Industry sources said the move reflects growing interest among shipowners in investing in environmentally sustainable tonnage that can comply with evolving global emission regulations.
The tender is also expected to support India’s broader maritime sustainability goals and strengthen the country’s presence in green shipping initiatives. Analysts noted that methanol-ready ships are increasingly being viewed as a viable pathway for reducing carbon emissions while maintaining operational efficiency in container shipping operations.
