Zodiac Maritime has expanded its presence in the vehicle shipping segment with a new shipbuilding order in China, reinforcing its strategy to grow in the car carrier (Ro-Ro) sector amid rising global demand for automotive logistics capacity.

Industry sources said the latest order is aimed at increasing Zodiac’s fleet of pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs), which transport finished vehicles across major international trade routes. The expansion comes as global automobile exports continue to grow, particularly from manufacturing hubs in Asia to markets in Europe, the Middle East and North America.

The car carrier segment has seen strong momentum in recent years due to rising vehicle production, electrification of the automotive industry and increased cross-border trade in electric vehicles. Analysts said limited global Ro-Ro vessel capacity and ageing fleets have led to higher freight rates and strong demand for new tonnage.

Zodiac Maritime’s latest move is expected to strengthen its long-term positioning in the specialized shipping market, where high-capacity car carriers play a critical role in supporting global automotive supply chains. The new vessels are likely to feature larger cargo capacity, improved fuel efficiency and compliance with emerging environmental regulations in the shipping industry.

Shipbuilding activity in China continues to dominate global vessel orders, particularly in the car carrier segment, where Asian yards have a strong competitive advantage in delivering large, energy-efficient ships. Industry experts noted that shipowners are increasingly placing orders in anticipation of sustained demand growth over the next decade.

The expansion also reflects broader trends in maritime transport, where vehicle logistics providers are investing in fleet modernization to support the rapid transformation of the automotive sector, including electric and hybrid vehicle exports.
