Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a stronger export orientation in India’s agriculture sector, urging farmers and stakeholders to tap global markets to drive growth and enhance farm incomes.

Addressing an event focused on the farm economy, the Prime Minister said India must move beyond meeting domestic demand and position its agricultural produce competitively in international markets. He stressed that exports can play a vital role in transforming the sector, improving value realisation for farmers and strengthening the rural economy.

Modi highlighted that India’s diverse agro-climatic conditions and expanding production base offer significant opportunities to scale up exports of fruits, vegetables, cereals, spices and processed food products. He also underlined the importance of improving quality standards, strengthening supply chains and adopting modern farming practices to meet global market requirements.

The government has been promoting initiatives to enhance agricultural exports, including better logistics infrastructure, cold chain facilities and export promotion schemes. Officials say these measures are aimed at reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring that Indian farm produce reaches overseas markets efficiently.

Industry experts note that greater integration with global value chains could help India unlock higher value from its agricultural output while supporting rural livelihoods. With rising global demand for food and agri-products, policymakers see exports as a key lever to accelerate the transformation of the farm sector.
